Taiwan, located off the southeastern coast of the Asian continent and on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, lies between Japan and the Philippines, positioned at the central point of the East Asian island arc. It serves as a critical hub for maritime and air transportation in the Asia-Pacific region. Covering a total area of approximately 36,000 square kilometers (14,400 square miles), Taiwan is characterized by a narrow east-west span and an elongated north-south axis.

The primary goal of this study is to compile and assess the current status of freshwater fish species in Taiwan's natural freshwater ecosystems. This involves reviewing survey reports and literature on freshwater fish in Taiwan's lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, and offshore islands. Additionally, a three-year comprehensive survey of freshwater fish resources will be conducted starting from 2009. This effort will include species assessments and analyses for the Red List, as well as the drafting and publication of the Red List. Supplemental field investigation data will also be integrated to establish a database encompassing the current status of freshwater fish ecology and related information. Item : 1. Complete the investigation and assessment of freshwater fish resources in Taiwan's native lakes and ponds, as well as in the freshwater ecosystems of its offshore islands. 2. Conduct in-depth supplementary field surveys and evaluations of stream fish species in Taiwan that require urgent conservation efforts. 3. Photograph the surveyed fish species that currently inhabit freshwater environments, capturing their ecology, habitats, and features for identification purposes (e.g., providing male and female photos if morphological differences exist). For species no longer present, provide specimen photos; if no specimens are available, include relevant explanations. 4. Compile data from the past two years of supplementary surveys to complete the drafting of Taiwan's freshwater fish Red List. This will include producing an electronic version for online access and printing 2,000 physical copies. Additionally, integrate data from the previous field surveys to establish an ecological status database for the Red List and related fish species.

Method step description:

  1. Observing Fish Breeding Periods Through shoreline and snorkeling observations, the study aims to identify the timing of the appearance of larval and juvenile fish in the wild and to document courtship or spawning behaviors of dominant wild fish populations. These observations will help infer the reproductive characteristics of specific fish species, providing essential references for future freshwater fish ecological conservation efforts and reproductive biology studies.
  2. Measuring Hydrological Environmental Factors The study records the substrate characteristics of surveyed habitats to understand the relationship between species occurrence frequency and substrate properties. Within the survey areas, three sampling points are randomly selected at the water surface layer. At these points, key water quality parameters are measured: Water temperature (using a Conductivity Meter), Conductivity (using a Conductivity Meter), Total dissolved solids (TDS) (using WTW-LF330), Turbidity (using a Turbidity Meter, AQUALYTIC PC Compact), and pH (using a pH Meter, Suntex TS-1). These measurements provide a detailed analysis of water quality factors in the surveyed environments.
  3. Standard Operating Procedure for Stream Freshwater Fish Field Surveys There are various methods for collecting freshwater fish, including shoreline observation, snorkeling, netting, bait trapping, electrofishing, and angling in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. Among these, electrofishing and cast netting have become the most commonly used methods in Taiwan in recent years due to their high efficiency and convenience in capturing fish within shallow waters (up to 1 m deep) along shorelines. However, in slow-flowing or stagnant habitats such as lakes and ponds, these methods often require supplementation with other techniques, particularly trap fishing, to achieve a more comprehensive survey of fish communities. Angling, on the other hand, introduces significant selection bias toward specific species and is therefore not recommended as part of the standard operating procedures for field surveys. In the 2010 survey, stream habitats were the primary focus, with electrofishing serving as the main method for freshwater fish ecological studies. Additional collection methods listed were applied as needed, depending on specific circumstances.
